THE CHANGING ROOM
The Changing Room is an interactive installation with video, text and movement which will be exhibited as part of the 2026 Oregon Contemporary Artists' Biennial: The Price of the Ticket, curated by TK Smith, and open April 3 - July 5, 2026.
The Changing Room draws a conceptual link between the birth of American democracy and the present threats to civic freedoms. Rooted in the historical metaphor of the “body politic,” The Changing Room interrogates how freedom is enacted and how citizenship is embodied or disembodied. What began as a promise of unalienable rights has curdled into hollow self-absorption, filtered through social media, algorithmic manipulation, and a pervasive culture of surveillance.
Several Portland based artists collaborated with Longstreth to create this work: Marilys Ernst, video artist & sound design, Jordan Isadore, movement & performance, Alex Meyer, construction & design consultant , Jesse Mejia, interaction design, Don Gavitte, narration and Rebecca Jordan Smith, narration.
The Changing Room is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council and the Office of Arts & Culture and the Precipice Fund and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
